Police history in Bury
Hi everybody
greetings from a Lancs Lassie now living in Western Australia -(which is sizzling at present - 40C today)
I am researching my friends family tree for her, (she was born in Accrington) and have come across the following ancestor.
Henry Chadwick (her 3 x ggfather) who in 1851 was a police sergeant living in Fernhill Rd Bury with his wife Sarah and 4 children, and by 1861 was shown on the census as a police superintendant, living at Eccles (about 8 miles away according to Genuki??) with his family.
Can anyone with local knowledge help me as to where I might look to find any records of the police in this area. I thought being a superintendant he may have been a figure of local importance? He was retired by 1871, living in Chorlton, and died I think in 1878
Any information including names of local newspapers of the era would be appreciated.
keep warm folks
Thanks in advance for any help.
Jackie

police history - Bury
Thanks so much David. Those links have been interesting and one site actually has records of his name in the police service. My friend is travelling to the Uk in March to visit her parents so she should be able to go along and hopefully get some copies of information relating to her ancestors. I have since found another ancestor of hers was also a Police superintendant, (their two children married each other - son and daughter of police superintendants, and the young man was also a police officer at the time of his marriage in 1861) - so I am hopeful of getting some info on them all.
Thanks again for your kindness in providing the information.
regards
Jackie
